This past Saturday was the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and rather than discuss my own 9/11 thoughts (I was 7, so not super insightful) I thought I’d share some really interesting articles & one podcast discussing 9/11 and the aftermath.
‘Things Are Going to Be Different Now’: How 9/11 changed life for Muslim American athletes
For My Journalism Students, Much Of 9/11 Is A Case Study Of What Not To Do
How 9/11 convinced Americans to buy, buy, buy
Raising Brown Boys in Post-9/11 America
Not Past It: 9/11 Makes Me Uncomfortable
What I’m Listening To:
Burn it All Down: How Sport Protects Abusers
Really insightful discussion on how the media, leagues, and teams play into the protection of abusers in sports. Did you know the NHL doesn’t have a domestic violence policy? What a garbage league.
What I’m Reading:
FantasticLand – Mike Brockoven
Lord of the Flies meets millennials meets Battle Royale is how I’d describe FantasticLand. After a hurricane hits FantasticLand, an amusement park in Florida, nearly 300 primarily college-aged employees are left stranded until the National Guard comes to rescue them. It follows the usual split off into different groups, tensions rise, etc. trope but I thought it was done well. I also enjoyed how it was written as an investigative tell-all told through first-person interviews. Great spooky season read.
