Earlier this week, it was reported that fentanyl contributed to Jimmy Hayes’ unexpected death earlier this year. His loss is devastating and it’s admirable that his family is choosing to share this information with the public, in hopes of spreading awareness and helping someone else.
And, with most conversations regarding fentanyl-related deaths, the conversation turned back to addiction and so-called “bad” drug use. This in part is because of Hayes’ father discussing his own personal history with addiction and the similar behaviours he saw in his son, and therefore a completely valid conversation, but, I think any conversation regarding fentanyl-contaminated drugs that focuses solely on addiction isn’t a full conversation.
Drug users should not have to face this life-threatening risk. Safe supply should be available to the masses. This isn’t a drug crisis or an overdose crisis, despite what politicians may try to convince you, this is a poisoning crisis. Referring to what is occurring as an overdose crisis puts the onus on the users, shifts the blame to them for using too much or implies that this is the fate they chose. Politicians are inferring that so-called addicts are getting what they deserve. Rather than investing in community services to protect drug users, governments are putting money towards carceral solutions, as if the police can arrest their way to fewer overdoses.
I’ve discussed this before, and I’m sure it’s something I’ll discuss again, but I think these conversations are so important when it comes to removing the stigma around drug use and addiction. We need to take a community-oriented, public health-focused approach to the fentanyl crisis as opposed to shaming and dehumanizing drug users. It’s almost as if we should care about other people. Who would’ve thought?

I’m sorry, I’m working through It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – which has been a fascinating journey – but I cannot stop thinking about the S12 ep: PTSDee. What a fucking adventure that was. Get ready for my IASIP thoughts once I’m caught up because I have a lot.
