I’m talking about hockey again.
I’m talking about hockey again because the players really can’t help but fucking tell on themselves, can they?
Earlier this month, Evander Kane’s wife went on Instagram and called out her soon-to-be ex-husband (they’re in the midst of divorcing) for losing all their money to gambling, leaving her and their young daughter alone to go party in Europe, cheating on her, etc. It’s horrible. She also accused him of “throwing games” and betting on his own games, which of course got the most attention from the NHL because, to quote me from the most recent RGP episode, they can excuse domestic violence and sexual assault but they draw the line at gambling.
But that’s not my bone to pick for today. I’ve picked that bone. My bone is with the players on the San Jose Sharks who are just so wildly fed up with Kane, that they’ve informed the Sharks’ head office that if Kane is still around for next season, they won’t be. Which is interesting. Very interesting. It’s interesting because I’ve never really heard this type of response when other players — no sorry, other white players — have so-called “off-ice issues”.
Players stand by abusers, rapists, and bigots. They will talk until they’re blue in the face about how no, that guy accused of rape is actually a Good Guy. And that buddy who has been repeatedly called out for using racial slurs has just made some mistakes. But the second there’s “issues” with Evander Kane (or PK Subban, or Josh Ho-Sang, or Akim Aliu, to name a few) there are sources saying teammates are drawing a line in the sand, they’re taking a stand? Isn’t that interesting.
I think that’s something white hockey fans, like myself, need to keep in mind when discussing these kinds of incidents. You can be upset about the claims made by Kane’s wife, but this is not an equal playing field. This is not going to be treated the same by management, hockey media, teammates, and hockey fans. We’ve seen this happen before. Several times.
What I’m Listening To:
Look, this podcast isn’t even out yet but this is my Super Bowl. This is my Watergate. This is my WE charity scandal — oh wait.
I have LONG had a vendetta against WE charity. I was in high school through 2008-2012 so truly the trenches when it came to youth saving the poor children in the very poor nation of … Africa. WE swept through my school like Europe swept through the African continent, preaching the White way and how they’re actually Helping These People. WE made my classmates insufferable. What was I doing to help the starving children? Well, not supporting obnoxious ego-maniacs for one. So yeah, I’m a little excited for Canadaland’s reporting on the WE charity. And god, isn’t white saviours a perfect name? *chefs kiss*
What I’m Reading:
The Shock Doctrine — Naomi Klein
Ok, so maybe I’m not currently reading this. But, with the latest news out of Afghanistan, it feels incredibly topical. I mean this book is ALWAYS topical but like, super in the news right now, ya know?
Also, in regards to Afghanistan, please read sources coming out of Afghanistan. We’ve discussed this before, but the mainstream media in nations such as the United States, Canada, and the UK are pushing an imperialist narrative. They’re presenting the news in a way that will allow for support of an invasion, of further war, of how we civilized nations need to help those backwards, barbaric nations.

Remember when Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau sang a song for her daughter, for MLK?
Till next time!
