Prior to the slap heard around the world (which I would argue was actually when Jwoww smacked The Situation but I digress) I was planning on writing up a little collection of the thoughts I had regarding the Oscars.
I’m not a Movie Person™ (I watched a total of three (3) of the nominated films) but I do enjoy tuning into the Oscars because I love spectacle, I love celebrities, and I love being part of things. I think that’s one thing I love most about the Oscars or even the Superbowl, they’re two of the few events left that we watch together. Even with shows like Euphoria, the Sunday drop doesn’t mean we’re all watching at the same time, so these live events mean a lot to me.
Alright, onto the ramblings:
Cutting the technical awards from the live broadcast and filling that so-called extra time with fan-voted Watch Mojo ass countdowns was one of the worst decisions the Oscars have ever made – and they made the decision to allow James Franco to co-host! Not only was this decision so insulting to the people who are truly the backbone of the movie industry, but the fan voting was completely ridiculous! The Flash entering the speed force was the favourite movie moment? Ok. Sure.
I am not a fashion person, I mainly send my fashion takes to my fashion inclined friends and await their validation of my opinions, but I know what I like. I’m really enjoying the revival of the velvet jacket, Jessica Chastain, H.E.R., Lupita Nyong'o, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Serena Williams.
Looks I didn’t care for? Kirsten Stewart, Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Daniel Kaluuya, and every man that wore a boring black suit.
Why was I so foolish to believe the We Don’t Talk About Bruno performance would’ve been of, I don’t know, the actual song? WDTAB wasn’t even nominated, but as a play for more eyes, The Oscars chose to have a performance. Cool, great idea! It’s been at the top of the charts for however long now, what a cool way to bring in a different audience! But then you have a dumb remix with lyrics referencing the Oscars and not singing the BEST PARTS! What’s the POINT!?
The “In Memoriam” portion of the evening felt very weird. Maybe it was because we were all still reeling from the earlier dramatics, but the upbeat vibes of this year were a little offputting. It was as if they heard every note regarding how slow the section usually is and went 100 mph in the other direction.
I know that Amy Schumer’s seat filler joke with Kirsten Dunst was, in fact, a joke but I don’t think it landed. I don’t know if Dunst was the right celebrity for that joke. I’m not about to tell comedians how to do their job (lol), but I think a more obvious A-lister is the right target, not Kirsten Dunst who is an absolute A-lister and phenomenal actress, but like, leave her alone. I think this joke works better with a more populist A-lister like had the Will/Chris shit not happened, this would’ve been funny to do with Will Smith. Or even Jesse Plemons, as opposed to Kirsten! I don’t know, it just rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it’s the Amy Schumer of it all.
I tweeted this, but Lady Gaga seems like such a genuinely wonderful person when it comes to her interactions with the elderly. Between her relationship with Tony Bennett and her interactions with Liza Minnelli at the Oscars, she just seems so genuine and caring and understanding of the difference between infantilizing the elderly and treating them as adults with dignity.
Why was DJ Khaled there?
Not to bring up The Slap again, but do I have to hit Chris Rock to be embraced by Denzel Washington? Is that the key here? Noted.
Have some Oscars tweets too, then maybe next week will be totally Oscars free (doubt it)
Till next time!
xoxo, Liz
